You know those days where you have to be extra intentional about putting one foot in front of the other to get something done? I’m having one of those. So grateful for God’s promises and the hope I have in Him. The Holy Spirit is making a little progress with me this morning and I am praying it continues to do so! I was looking for something encouraging and I found 1 Timothy 4:17 on a meme, kindof like this one.
Then I looked at the passage and found even more encouragement there. The passage isn’t “whatever I was doing God was happy with me and strengthened me.” In 2 Timothy chapter 4 Paul is talking about how he was deserted by everyone initially when he was taken into custody in Rome.
Much of the second part of this letter reflects on the loneliness Paul is suffering through.
Some of his companions have gone other places to share the Good News, but others have abandoned the faith altogether.
But then Paul, ever an example of where we can find our hope, says while no one would be a witness for me in his hearing before a court in Rome,
“the Lord stood with me and strengthened me, so that through me the proclamation might be fully accomplished, and that all the Gentiles might hear; and I was rescued out of the lion’s mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed, and will bring me safely to His heavenly kingdom; to Him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.” (2 Tim 4:17-18)
Paul’s future was bleak and his ministry was putting him in more and more danger. But God continued to reveal to him the larger picture and the power of the Gospel.
Paul was often in chains when God’s grace and power gave Him strength and hope. Surely it would be even easier for God to reveal these things to those of us not in physical chains, not faced with the literal persecution of the church, not facing impending death for our faith in God.
I pray Paul can be a comfort to those who do feel abandoned and frustrated in their current circumstances.
There are so many questions and demands on us and frequently I don’t know the right answers. But I do know the Lord will strengthen me when I come to Him seeking the best way forward. I do know He will not abandon us.
I am certain of His love and mercy.
Have a great week, friends.
